What do the Filipino youth want to tell President Rodrigo Duterte as he starts his 6-year administration?

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte took his oath in Malacañang Palace on Thursday, June 30, making him the 16th president of the Philippines. 

In his inaugural speech, the mayor-turned-president said that he is elected not to serve “the interests of any one person or any group or any one class. I serve every one and not only one.” He declared, “I have no friends to serve, I have no enemies to harm.”

He ended his inaugural speech, saying, “I am here because I love my country and I love the people of the Philippines. I am here, why? Because I am ready to start my work for the nation.” (READ: FULL TEXT: President Rodrigo Duterte’s inaugural speech)

What do the Filipino youth want to tell Duterte in return? 

Rappler asked 11 youth leaders about their message for the new Philippine president as he starts his six-year administration. 

On May 9, millions of Filipinos trooped to the polling precincts to cast their ballots. With a record-breaking voters’ turnout of 81%, the nation elected its next leaders.  Dubbed as the first social media-led presidential elections which produced a Mindanaoan for President and a former Congresswoman for Vice President, the 2016 presidential elections highlighted the role of the youth in nation-buildng.
