Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco transforms into the look of Manila on Christmas day
SAN FRANCISCO, USA – The Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco transformed into a “Manila on Christmas day” when a host of Filipino community groups gathered around carrying big and bright parol lanterns for an event called the Parol Stroll on Saturday, December 14.
Celebrating its 11th year, the Parol Stroll gathers Bay area Filipino groups to compete for the best designed parol lantern.
Each contingent made its own parol to represent its group as well as the event’s annual theme. This year, the theme was “Liwanag para sa tanan; Enlightenment for all,” promoting immigration reform and gay rights.
Participants included non-profit organizations for seniors and veterans, after school programs for kids, Filipino theater and arts groups, environmental groups, and college cultural clubs.
Three contingents with the best designed parol and best stage performance were named winners.
First place went to the Veterans Equity Center while Canon Kip Senior Center and Filipino Education Center, Galing Bata were named second and third place, respectively.
