MANILA, Philippines – Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald dela Rosa is set to attend the International Police Organization (Interpol) general assembly in Beijing, China from September 26 to 29, the PNP announced Monday, September 25. Dela Rosa flew to Beijing Monday morning.

The Interpol conference is an annual meeting of top police officials of countries worldwide to discuss transnational crimes and discuss lessons in promoting public safety.

According to PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, Dela Rosa will maximize his time in China by talking with other top cops on how to improve the PNP’s unrelenting war on drugs.

“The PNP will take advantage of the general assembly to be able to give with counterparts, and the partners also, in the different thrusts of the Philippine National Police particularly on drugs, illegal drugs, illicit drugs, best practices against criminality and the anti-corruption networks,” Carlos told reporters in a press briefing.

The PNP’s own war on crime and drugs has achieved so much but has also been criticized for a succession of questionable killings linked to apparent irregularities in police operations. (READ: The Impunity Series)

For the campaign against illegal drugs, the PNP has confiscated at least 1,680 kilograms of shabu worth around P8.4 billion.

According to a Reuters report, China is poised to focus the agenda of the meetings on terrorism and corruption — problems the Philippines is already familiar with, as the nation has been at war with Islamic State (IS)-inspired homegrown terrorists since May.

Dela Rosa is expected to provide updates on the meetings in October after he comes back. – Rappler.coma
