CAGAYAN, Philippines (UPDATED) – Former La Union representative Eufranio Eriguel and his two bodyguards were shot dead on Saturday, May 12.
The La Union and Agoo town police confirmed the shooting of Eriguel, but refused to give further details yet as initial investigation is still ongoing.
Eriguel and his two bodyguards were killed in Barangay Capas in Agoo, La Union around 7 pm on Saturday. Agoo police identified the civilian bodyguards as Bong Tubera and Bobby Ordinario.
Eriguel was reportedly attending a gathering in the said barangay when the suspects opened fire. According to the police report, the suspects were aboard a black Mitsubishi Montero and a white Toyota Innova.
All police stations in the second district of La Union have since launched dragnet operations against the suspects.
Eriguel was a two-term congressman of the second district of La Union. He also served as mayor of Agoo for 3 terms.
His wife Sandra replaced him as representative, while his daughter Stefanie is the current mayor of Agoo.
In April 2016, Eriguel’s convoy was bombed by still unidentified assailants. Four people were injured following the incident. – Rappler.com
