NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines (UPDATED) – The director of Canlaon District Hospital in Canlaon City here was shot dead at a national highway in Barangay Basak, Guihulngan City on Tuesday morning, November 20. 

Dr Avelex Amor, a resident of Dumaguete City, just disembarked from his vehicle  when he was attacked by 3 unidentified suspects, said Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, director of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office.  

According to the victim’s companion, one of the assailants approached the victim and shot him several times, Tacaca said.

The suspects then fled on board a motorcycle. 

The victim was rushed to Guihulngan District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.   

Recovered from the crime were 4 fired cartridges of caliber .45 pistol. 

Tacaca said the investigation was ongoing, but the initial report indicated that grudge was one of the motives of the incident. 

The UP Medicine Student Council mourned the death of Amor, and urged the government to solve his killing.

“We call on the government to address not only the recent death of Dr Amor but also the deaths of the other doctors and the numerous frontline health workers. As the state aims to provide health for all, one if its main goals should be the protection of human resources especially those in the community,” it said in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday.

“We call on our fellow health professionals to remain vigilant and relentlessly call for justice, and to continue serving the underserved,” it added.
