MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – As the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated the complaint against Cosmic Carabao Gin, netizens took to social media to help warn the public against the product and to ask bars and stores to take it off their shelves.
The FDA on Tuesday, July 9, ordered the seizure of all Cosmic Carabao Gin products in the market after it found a “high level of methanol” in samples of the alcoholic beverage tested by the agency.
It announced the findings of its investigation 4 days afer it began the probe into the gin brand. This followed a report that a woman died and another woman showed signs of possible methanol poisoning after consuming the product, which is not registered with the FDA.
It advised the public against consuming products that are not FDA-reigstered and reminded business establishments to “strictly comply with the FDA’s existing rules and regulations to ensure that only safe and quality products shall be made available to the public.”
Prior to FDA announcement on the findings of its investigation, some netizens took to social media to help warn the public against consuming the gin brand.
Some said they personally knew those affected.
do not drink cosmic carabao gin, a friend of my sister actually died due to methanol poisoning. there was a “bad” batch released and the product isn’t even approved by the FDA. apparently these twitterbots are trying to defend the product. pic.twitter.com/nUIovFjeAh

Others singled out bars who had chosen to continue selling the product despite the reports.

There were also netizens who focused on stubborn people who probably got even more curious to try Cosmic Carabao Gin despite the FDA warning.
Alam ko may iba pa rin diyang makukulit na gustong sumubok just because. ‘Di naman sa pagiging KJ pero kung thrill hanap niyo, go look for it elsewhere. Don’t try something that can possibly cost you your life.

2 young women went for drinks somewhere Maginhawa 3 days ago. Slipped into a coma soon after. One died. Other just came out of it, but still unable to speak. Negative for recreational drugs. Positive symptoms of methanol poisoning.

Where’s your accountability?
Netizens also accused the gin manufacturer of allegedly mobilizing an army of Twitter bots to defend it online, rather than being accountable for the incidents.
What not to do in a crisis: #JuanBrew with the Twitter bots! #CosmicCarabao
— Cat Triviño (@sinosicat) July 8, 2019
Grabe yung bot replies defending Juan Brew??? Regardless kung dahil sa gin yun or not, walang karapatan ang manufacturer/distributor to sell the product without obtaining a cert of product registration from FDA. Ang kakapal ng mga mukha.
PSA @JuanBrew is using bots to spam and rid themselves of their crime and accountability. @Twitter @TwitterSupport – there are accounts in this thread that are spamming the same message over and over. Most accounts have 0-5 followers, and were created in the past week or so. https://t.co/rGXMdxCah2
The amount of bots in this thread is crazy? Juan Brew sketchy af. You guys should be held accountable for this huge fuck up. Someone needs to go to jail for this. https://t.co/R01wbNgnO6
hahahaha dami niyong budget para sa bots ha @JuanBrew! where's your accountability? https://t.co/mqrRqtRQJu
