Malacañang: Prepare for Labuyo before watching Gilas game

MANILA, Philippines – As the entire country anticipates the finals match between Gilas Pilipinas and Iran at the FIBA Asia championships, Malacañang on Sunday, August 11, reminded the public to prioritize making the necessary preparations for the onslaught of Typhoon Labuyo (international codename: Utor). 

“So ‘yung paalala lang po natin, alam po nating marami pong nag-aabang ‘nung Finals match po mamaya ng Gilas laban ho sa Iran, ngunit huwag po nating kalimutan na medyo meron po tayong Typhoon Labuyo na nagbabadya kaya maghanda po tayo bago po tayo manood ng laro po mamayang gabi,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview. 

(Since we know many are anticipating the Finals match later of Gilas versus Iran, let’s not forget that Typhoon Labuyo is coming that’s why we need to prepare before we watch the game later.) 

The Palace assured the public the government is prepared to respond to the storm. 

Valte cited the measures put in place by the government. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has been placed on red alert (NDRRMC) while the Philippine Coast Guard has also been instructed to be on heightened alert. 

Valte said relief goods for areas that would be affected by Labuyo have also been readied.

In a historic victory on Saturday night, August 10, the Philippine team clinched a spot in the FIBA Asia finals Sunday and the FIBA World Cup in Spain next year after beating South Korea. 

Valte said President Benigno Aquino III extends his congratulations to the team and wishes to say the country’s prayers are with them. – Angela Casauay/Rappler.com
