ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III left Zamboanga City Sunday, September 22, after staying there for more than a week monitoring the crisis in the city.

Aquino said he needs to return to the capital to attend to other “pressing” concerns. He cited pending appointments to the Office of the Ombudsman as an example, during a pre-departure press conference at the Zamboanga airport.

Aquino has been at the city since September 13, the fifth day of the siege launched by members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

As of Sunday noon, a total of 125 people have died, while at least 195 have been injured from all sides, according to the armed forces.

More than 118,000 residents have fled their villages to escape the fighting between government troops and the rebels. – With reports from Carmela Fonbuena/Rappler.com
