2 soldiers dead, 6 hurt in Kalinga ambush

(UPDATE) Two soldiers died while 6 were injured when alleged NPA members ambushed a group transporting PCOS machines in Kalinga Thursday

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Two soldiers died while 6 others were injured when armed men, believed to be members of the New People’s Army, ambushed a group transporting PCOS machines in Kalinga Thursday, May 9.

Members of the Philippine Army’s 17th Infantry Brigade was on their way to accompany the delivery of PCOS machines from Tabuk to the towns of Lubuagan and Tinglayan when they were ambushed at Sitio Pasiking, Barangay Bagumbayan.

Two soldiers, identified Cpl Wilfredo Bacacao and Cpl Allen Pattaguan, died while being treated at the Kalinga Hospital, according to Col. Roger Salvador, commanding officer of the 501st Infantry Brigade. 

The injured soldiers were:

  • Tsgt. Herminigildo Vergara
  • Tsgt. Constante Alupani
  • Ssgt. Michael Adducul
  • Ssgt. Rico dela Cuesta
  • Sgt. Wayne Aguinaldo
  • Pfc. Delfin Goyagoy

The casualties were brought to the 5th Army Division in Gamu, Isabela.

The area is a known territory of the Naneng tribe, as well as an area where the NPA is active.
