MANILA, Philippines – US Vice President Kamala Harris will visit the Philippines after she attends the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting in Thailand in November, the White House announced on Saturday, October 29.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Harris will participate in the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok from November 18 to 19, and then head to Manila.

“In the Philippines, she will meet with government leaders and civil society representatives. Her visit will reaffirm and strengthen the US-Philippines Alliance and underscore the breadth of our cooperation as friends, partners, and allies,” Jean-Pierre said.

Jean-Pierre said that Harris’ participation at the APEC meeting  “will underscore the US commitment to economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and she will outline US goals for our APEC host year in 2023.”

“During her visit to Thailand, the Vice President will engage with Thai leaders and civil society representatives to reaffirm and strengthen the US-Thai Alliance and to discuss our cooperation across a range of issues,” she added.

The White House said Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will travel with the Vice President to Bangkok and participate in the APEC spousal program, among other engagements. He will also join Harris in Manila.

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs said Harris’ forthcoming working visit to the Philippines “will be yet another excellent opportunity to further strengthen our engagement with the United States, following the recent high-level meetings and exchange of visits between our two countries.”

No other details on Harris’ visit were provided but the DFA said that it was in close coordination with the US embassy “to finalize arrangements for the working visit” of Harris and the Second Gentleman.

US President Joe Biden will also go on overseas trips in November for the COP27 United Nations climate change summit in Egypt, the annual US-ASEAN summit and the East Asia Summit in Cambodia, and the summit of leaders from the Group of 20 major economies in Indonesia. – Rappler.com
