Lapu-Lapu City lights up more houses in Olango with solar panels

The Lapu-Lapu City government set up 80 solar panels in homes in the islet barangay of Olango, Caohagan on Sunday, March 21.

Besides the 24/7 electricity provided by the Olango Power Plant set up in February, residents of the islet barangay will have fewer issues lighting their homes – a problem they’ve had for a very long time.

“Kon kaniadto magsalig lang sila sa supply gikan sa mga generator, kandila, o lamparilya. Karon, aduna na silay ilang kaugalingong panuga kay atong gisiguro nga tanang kabalayan sa isla mahatagan og solar panel sets,” said Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on his official Facebook page.

(If before they used to rely on supply from generators, candlelight, or lamps, now they will have their own supply to light their homes because we made sure that all the households on the island would be given solar panel sets.)

“Dili usab mabalaka ang mga residente sa Caohagan kung maguba ang mga libre nga solar panel sets tungod kay aduna kini 3 ka tuig nga warranty,” he added. (Residents of Caohagan also don’t have to worry if these free solar panel sets become damaged since they have a 3-year warranty)

The islet of Caohagan is known for its clean shoreline, crystal-clear water, and friendly locals. It is also among the best places in Cebu to go snorkeling.

All of this was done under the mayor’s “Kahayag Mo, Kaugmaon Ko” program, which aims to light up the homes in the island of Olango, including its islets, and areas in Lapu-Lapu City without lights.

The mayor mentioned that not only did they give away free solar panel sets, they also installed 25 solar-powered street lights along the pathways of the barangay.

In the first run of the program, they donated solar panel sets, LED lights, and smartphone connectors to the island of Pangan-an, situated south of Olango Island.

Chan said that in the upcoming week, they will be visiting Caubian Island, located east of Mactan, to also provide them with solar panel sets.
