Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte, candidates for the two highest posts in the land, are wrapping up their 2022 campaign in cities that played host to key stops in the 90-day campaign period.
Marcos and Duterte have three scheduled miting de avance events – first in Guimbal, Iloilo; then in Tagum City, Davao del Norte; and finally in Parañaque City, Metro Manila. Their final miting de avance in the National Capital Region caps their 2022 campaign that has seen Marcos and Duterte topping preference surveys.

Tracking the Marcos disinformation and propaganda machinery

As the 2022 polls inch closer, the online landscape becomes more difficult to navigate due to the deluge of disinformation that has favored the frontrunner of the presidential race – the dictator’s son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
How does he sustain and gain support online? His camp and his supporters employ tactics that involve spreading lies and utilizing networks that platforms are too slow to stop. It is a years-long effort that will come to a head on May 9, when Filipinos will cast their votes.
Check this page to read Rappler investigations and reports on the many ways propaganda and disinformation related to the Marcoses thrive on social media, how platforms either respond or allow it to happen, and how the Marcos family benefits from the lies and manipulation.
Welcome to the Marcos campaign, where journalists are blocked and boxed out
The dictator’s son Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. runs a presidential campaign that hides from and even blocks professional journalists who cover him – whether they belong to local or international newsrooms.
His camp gives preferential treatment to vloggers, influencers, and the Sonshine Media Network International that is operated by the followers of doomsday preacher Apollo Quiboloy, who owns the company and is wanted in the United States for alleged sex trafficking of children.
Pollution watchdog EcoWaste Coalition on Saturday morning, May 7, appealed to organizers of the national candidates’ miting de avance to keep their events “litter-free as much as possible.”
“Huge public assemblies often leave a horrendous amount of garbage, including scattered campaign leaflets, sample ballots, disposable beverage and food containers, food waste, cigarette butts, and used face masks,” the EcoWaste Coalition said.
The group urged organizers to:
request supporters to bring their own food and water in reusable containers to avoid consuming food and water in single-use disposable packaging
remind supporters through the public address system not to throw litter on the ground, and to pick up trash before heading home
refrain from setting off firecrackers and fireworks, throwing confetti, and releasing balloons to conclude the event
organize volunteers to clean up right after the gathering
