Online polls: Cayetano sweeps rounds, but Robredo is overall winner

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Alan Peter Cayetano swept Rappler’s online polls for all 7 rounds of the vice presidential debate on Sunday, April 10, but when we asked our readers who the overall winner was, they chose Camarines Sur 3rd District Representative Leni Robredo.

Here’s how Cayetano fared in Rappler’s online polls:

• Round 1 – 47.17%
• Round 2 – 50.78%
• Round 3 – 47.62%
• Round 4 – 41.12%
• Round 5 – 54.88%
• Round 6 – 41.57%
• Round 7 – 51.3%
• Overall – 36.25%

Cayetano was in fighting form throughout the debate, repeatedly attacking his fellow senator and party mate, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, and the regime of Marcos’ father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. (READ: Cayetano hits Marcos: Your family stole $10 billion)

For Rappler editors, Cayetano also emerged the winner in the debate, because “he was most consistent in talking about his and presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte’s platforms,” which centered on political will and leadership. (READ: Rappler editors’ pick: Cayetano wins VP debate)

But social media users who voted on Rappler’s final online poll chose Robredo as overall winner. The Camarines Sur representative had consistently placed second to Cayetano in the previous online polls. Here are the percentages for Robredo:

• Round 1 – 30.19%
• Round 2 – 27.46%
• Round 3 – 35.71%
• Round 4 – 35.05%
• Round 5 – 23.78%
• Round 6 – 36.75%
• Round 7 – 29.87%
• Overall – 41.58%

Rappler editors surmised that Robredo’s overtaking of Cayetano may have been due to her strong closing statement, which ended with, “Sa amin pong anim (Among the 6 of us), may the best woman win!”

Robredo is the only female vice presidential candidate, and her line apparently struck a chord among netizens.

Marcos, meanwhile, consistently placed 3rd in Rappler’s online polls, from Round 1 to the final poll for the overall winner. Here are the votes for Marcos:

• Round 1 – 20%
• Round 2 – 17.62%
• Round 3 – 14.76%
• Round 4 – 21.96%
• Round 5 – 14.63%
• Round 6 – 16.87%
• Round 7 – 17.53%
• Overall – 18.21%

The 3 other candidates – senators Francis Escudero, Antonio Trillanes IV, and Gregorio Honasan II – trailed far behind.
