One of Marcos’ first public activities on Monday, September 19, was a fireside chat at the New York Stock Exchange and the honor of ringing the closing bell on the trading floor.
John Tuttle, vice chairman of the NYSE, said Marcos had “clearly… gained the attention of business leaders and investors,” owing to the crowd who had gathered at a hall in the NYSE building ahead of the closing bell ceremony.
Gathered at the trading hub was Marcos’ economic team and delegation, as well as key Filipino business leaders. Among those who attended by NYSE event include Ramon Ang, Lance Gokongwei, Joey Concepcion, and Sabin Aboitiz, who heads Marcos’ Private Sector Advisory Council.
Tuttle characterized the Philippines as one with an “ambitious work force.” He’d later ask Marcos his pitch for US-based businesses and investors.
‘The US has not failed us’
On his second day in the US, President Marcos doubled down in emphasizing the importance of PH-US ties. During a fireside chat with New York Stock Exchange vice chairman John Tuttle, Marcos said he “cannot see the Philippines in the future without having the United States as a partner.”
It was an insight he first shared during a private meeting with US-Philippine society on geopolitics but he said it applies to the economy as well.
“I cannot overstate the role the US has played in every aspect of our lives,” he said.
