Nando near Taiwan; Monsoon over parts of Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm Nando (Kong-rey) continues to move closer to Taiwan as it moves just east of Batanes Wednesday, August 28, and will continue to bring rain to the area Thursday, August 29.

Nando was spotted 180 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes (22.0°N, 122.8°E) as of 4 pm, carrying maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h and gusts of up to 120 km/h.

Only Batanes remains under a public storm warning signal. Signal #1 is hoisted over the province. Elsewhere, storm signals are lowered.

The province will experience rains with gusty winds with moderate to rough seas until the storm moves away, the bureau said in its 24-hour forecast Thursday.

The storm is moving north at 15 km/h, and is expected to be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday afternoon.

Nando will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing moderate rain & thunderstorms over western parts of central and south Luzon.

The Babuyan & Calayan islands, Zambales, and the Cordillera and Ilocos regions are expected to have cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain & thunderstorms.

The rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, while the Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain.
