MANILA, Philippines – The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is officially among the world’s new 7 wonders of nature.

Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn told a press briefing on Saturday, January 28 that this 17-kilometer natural wonder got a lot of votes in a global survey, enough for it to be included in the new wonders of nature list.

Hagedorn said the inclusion of the underground river will boost tourism traffic in Puerto Princesa and heighten awareness about the need to protect it.

Bernard Weber, new 7 wonders of nature president, confirmed the triumph.

The Office of the Presidential Spokesperson, meanwhile, welcomed the news, saying in a statement that throughout the competition, “Filipinos from all walks of life have given time, energy, and resources to this campaign.”

“This effort has raised awareness not only overseas, but nationally as well: visits to the PPUR have increased tremendously. This is proof positive of how effective a national effort of this sort can be: to build awareness, express pride, and achieve results,” the statement said.

Besides the Puerto Princesa Underground River, also in the list are the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazo Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, and Table Mountain. – Rappler.com
