Cayetano offered foreign affairs, justice posts
Former SEC chairman and ex-vice presidential bet Perfecto Yasay is the acting foreign secretary, says president-elect Rodrigo Duterte

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has a choice between the foreign affairs and justice portfolios in president-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s cabinet.

In a press conference in Davao City on Monday, May 16, Duterte said he has offered Cayetano, his running mate in the 2016 elections, a choice of heading either the DFA or the DOJ.

However, election rules state that a losing candidate has to wait one year before taking up a post in government. This means Cayetano will need to sit out a year before accepting either the DFA or DOJ posts.

Cayetano has yet to decide on which post he will eventually take up, Duterte said.

In the meantime, Duterte has offered former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Perfecto Yasay Jr the post of acting foreign secretary, until Cayetano can take up the post, if he chooses it. (READ: List of who’s who in the incoming Duterte Cabinet)

Yasay, who is from Davao, ran for vice president in 2010 as the running mate of Brother Eddie Villanueva. He was SEC chairman under the Ramos administration, and was one of those who testified against then President Joseph Estrada during the latter’s impeachment trial in 2000.

Yasay, however, currently has a one-year committment to teach at a university in Hawaii, but Duterte said if the former SEC chief can take a furlough, he is welcome to join the cabinet.

Aside from Cayetano, other names in the Duterte cabinet include Arthur Tugade for transportation and communications, and Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez for finance. (READ: Duterte names Tugade for DOTC, eyes Dominguez for finance) –
