Abu Sayyaf kidnaps German, kills female companion – report
Reports show the body of the German's female companion was found in Sulu Sunday morning

MANILA, Philippines – The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) claimed to have taken another foreigner as hostage, a German, in Western Mindanao, according to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report on Monday, November 7.

ASG spokesman Muaamar Askali or Abu Rami spoke to Inquirer in a telephone interview and said they abducted Juegen Kantner off Tawi-Tawi early Sunday, November 6.

He also said they shot dead Kantner’s female companion, whose body was apparently the one found by residents in Barangay Darul Akram, Sulu province Sunday morning.

Embassy knows

The ASG spokesman allowed the Inquirer to interview Kantner, who said he was sailing on a private yacht with a female companion he identified as Sabrina when they were attacked.

“Pirates took our boat and they took us. We asked help from the embassy to help us,” Kantner told the Inquirer.

Major Filemon Tan, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command, said residents of Sulu found a cadaver of a female foreigner in her 50s in an abandoned blue yacht flying a German flag.

Reports showed the cadaver was found in Barangay Darul Akram, Laparan Island in Sulu, with a shotgun beside it. The same reports showed the cadaver had gunshot wounds.

The kidnapping happened despite intensified military operations in southern Mindanao to hunt down the kidnap-for-ransom group.

In 2014, the Abu Sayyaf also kidnapped 2 Germans who spent 6 months in captivity and were released only when ransom was paid.
