MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A strong tremor hit south of Manila Wednesday evening, June 25, but it was felt as well in the national capital region and even as far as Central Luzon.

In a bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5.7 earthquake with a depth of 36 kilometers happened in Calatagan, Batangas, at around 7:52 pm Manila time.

In an interview over DZBB, Phivolcs seismologist Ishmael Narag said they do not expect the quake to generate a tsunami. 

Phivolcs said the following intensities were felt: 

  • Intensity V: Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro; Batangas City; Looc, Lubang, Mamburao, Sablayan, and Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro
  • Intensity IV: Malolos, Bulacan; Tagaytay City; Mabini, Batangas; Indang and Rosario in Cavite; Naujan, San Teodoro, Pola, and Socorro in Oriental Mindoro
  • Intensity III: Quezon City; Pasig City; Taguig City; Manila City; Parañaque City; Bacoor, Cavite; Baco, Oriental Mindoro; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Talisay, Batangas; Taal Volcano Island in Batangas
  • Intensity II: Binangonan, Rizal; Lucban, Quezon; Makati City; San Pedro, Laguna
  • Intensity I: Caloocan City

The United States Geological Survey, meanwhile, reported a magnitude 5.6 quake with a depth of 76 kilometers, 28 kilometers south southeast of Calatagan.
