2014 Bar topnotcher: I hoped to pass, didn’t expect to be No. 1
San Beda law graduate Irene Mae Alcobilla says she got the good news via messaging app Viber but thought it was a joke, at first

MANILA, Philippines – A day before the results of the 2014 bar exams, Irene Mae Alcobilla posted this on Facebook: “I declare that tomorrow, my dream will come true in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Like the 5,984 examinees who eagerly awaited the results on Thursday, March 26, she was hopeful she would pass one of the country’s hardest licensure exams.

But when the results were finally out, and her name announced as this year’s topnotcher among the 1,126 who passed, the San Beda College of Law graduate could hardly believe it.

She told ANC that she got the news via messaging app Viber, but didn’t think it was serious.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke,” she said.

Alcobilla, who graduated with a degree in political science from West Visayas State University, added that she was overjoyed once the news sank in.

The San Beda graduate who hails from San Remigio, Antique, said that after taking the difficult exams, all she had hoped for was simply to pass.

Sobrang hirap po ng exam. Pero sinabi ko na lang na nakasagot naman ako doon. May sense naman ang sagot ko e, sabi ko papasa na ako doon, parang ganoon (The exam was difficult. But I told myself that I managed to answer my questions, and my answers made sense. I said, I’d be able to pass),” she said.

Alcobilla added, Sobrang nagulat po talaga ako kasi hindi naman po kasi ako ganun kagaling (I was so surprised because I’m not that good).”

Alcobilla is one of the 3 San Beda graduates who made it to the top 10.

The last time San Beda produced a topnotcher was in 2009 – Reineir Paul Yebra.

A total of 1,126 out of 5,984 takers passed the exams. This is a passing rate of 18.82% – lower than 2013 figures when 22.18% or 1,174 out of 5,593 examinees passed. The passing grade was 73%. (READ: FULL LIST: 2014 Bar exam results) – Rappler.com
