Coming this May: New LRT, MRT ‘tap and go’ cards
The new, reloadable tap and go card for passengers of Metro Manila's 3 railway lines will soon be available, starting with the LRT2 this May

MANILA, Philippines – By the end of the month, passengers of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2 will be able to use the new ticketing system that allows for faster “tap and go” access to the train service.

Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) spokesman Hernando Cabrera posted photos of the new Beep card, a stored value ticket that can be used for LRT Lines 1 and 2 and the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3).

The new automated fare collection system (AFCS) is set to go live for the LRT2 in May.

This would be followed by the LRT1 in June and MRT3 in September.

The new card, which will be valid for 4 years, will be sold for P20, and can be reloaded with up to P10,000 in credits.

Passengers can reload the card at the teller’s booth in each station, or through ticket vending machines found at all LRT1 and 2 stations, except for the Bambang, Abad Santos, and R. Papa stations in Line 1.

Cabrera said the new card will also be sold through retailers outside the train stations.

Once the new system goes live, passengers with remaining balance in their old stored value cards can have the amount carried over to the new Beep cards.

Aside from offering easier, faster access to all 3 railway lines of the metro, Cabrera said the new ticket can also be personalized to automatically implement the fare discount for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Earlier, the LRTA announced that it would temporarily stop the sale and use of stored value cards for southbound passengers on Line 1, to allow for the installation of the new AFCS gates.

Passengers traveling on the southbound LRT1 line will have to use uncoded tickets and ticket coupons.

The LRTA said it would post notices on the start of implementation of the new system.

LRT Line 1 runs from Roosevelt in Quezon City to Baclaran in Parañaque City while Line 2 runs from Santolan in Marikina City to C.M. Recto in Manila.

The MRT3 runs from North Avenue station in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City. –
