Basas, Teng stand out in high school all-star game

MANILA, Philippines – Led by the brilliance of Ariel Basas Jr from the Mapua Red Robins and coached by San Beda’s Britt Reroma, the white team became the first-ever champion in the maiden staging of National Basketball Traning Camp’s (NBTC) High School All-Star Game through an 87-81 win.

Off to a fiery start, the white team went on an early 6-0 blast but not before the blue team, led by the production of Antonio Bonsubre, answered back with a 7-2 run.

Behind the efforts of Xavier School standout Jeron Teng, the blue team eventually led by one, 17-16 at the end of the first.

Through the dynamic partnership of Basas and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu pillar Julius Cadavis, the white team again took over the driver’s seat at the half, 47-37. Paolo Jabines of Pilgrim Christian College Cagayan De Oro provided the bucket at the 1:36 mark of the second that gave the white team their biggest lead of 12, 43-31.

To open up the third, a 15-2 run by the blue team spearheaded by Teng gave them another taste of the lead, 52-49 midway in the quarter.

De La Salle Zobel’s pride John Boo shattered the defense of the blue team as he led the white team in the third when they enjoyed another hairline lead of 61-60 at the end of the quarter.

In the pivotal fourth, with the game relatively close, a triple from San Beda’s Francis Abarcar followed by 2 canned charities from JJ Alejandro created some separation for both teams. The white team relinquished another comfortable 78-69 cushion.

Consecutive baskets from the very aggressive Teng, who is Taft-bound provided firepower that the blue team needed in order to get back in the game.

The Jeff Napa-mentored blue team came back within five, 76-81 with 2:41 left but another San Beda Red Cubs standout in Daryl Nazareno pumped in two consecutive baskets for another 85-76 cushion.

It was than enough for the white team to runaway with the win, with time being on their side.

Standouts

At the end of the game, Antonio Bonsubre, Julius Cadavis, Ariel Basas Jr., John Boo and Jeron Teng were named as the Elite or Mythical Five of the event.

Basas was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player after he provided key baskets in the first half that gave the white team a good head start.

Rizal Province Governor Jun Ynares was also present as the special guest of honor as was Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios.

Both are celebrating their birthdays today.
