Alaska Aces (83) – (81) Rain or Shine Elasto Painters
Best: The Alaska frontline produced a combined 38 points and 18 rebounds. French-American Robert Dozier and Sonny Thoss paired up well, especially on offense.
Worst: Bruno Sundov was great for ROS, but NOBODY else finished in double-figures for coach Yeng Guiao. No local Painter scored more than 8 points.
The Beast doesn’t need to score much to be effective: Calvin Abueva shot just 1-of-8 from the floor, but he made up for his shooting woes by grabbing FOURTEEN rebounds. Looks like he will still be an awesome stat-stuffer despite the presence of Dozier.
Meralco Bolts (99) – (92) Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters
Best: Eric Dawson just announced to the rest of the league that he’s out to win in emphatic fashion. The former Austin Toro scored 34 points, collared 14 boards, blocked 4 shots, had 2 assists, and got 2 steals. Awesome Dawson?
Worst: Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s reunion with coach Norman Black was uneventful save for 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 turnovers, and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. Looks like he won’t be much more than just another warm body to spell Keith Benson.
So, yeah, the Bolts should be fine without Sol Mercado: Ronjay Buenafe erupted for 19 points on 6-of-8 FG shooting including 3 triples, while Chris Ross narrowly missed a double-double by grabbing 9 boards and dishing out 8 assists. They also combined for just one turnover. Wow. Who’s rebuilding again?
