MARIKINA CITY, Philippines – The Philippines scored its second straight win in boys basketball as they clobbered Singapore, 80-61, in the 6th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) at Marist School Gym, Tuesday, December 2.
With a more solid lineup, the Filipinos overwhelmed the Singaporeans behind the outstanding play of Joshua Caraciit, who unloaded 20 points.
Flashing sharp forms, Norrish Decapia supplied 18 points while the rest of the team provided the needed backup to make Philippines’ domination of Singapore possible in a grueling 40-minute battle.
“Sobrang nagpapasalamat ako sa Panginoon. Blessed kami na nandito kami and nanalo kahit na malalaki yung kalaban namin,” said Caraciit when asked about how he feels with the win. (I’m so thankful to God for our win. We feel so blessed to be here and to win even if the other team was a lot bigger than us.)
But it was the Philippines’ tough defense and brilliant plays that made the exceptional difference.
“Actually nagkapaan lang sila kasi ngayon lang dumating yung dalawa at ngayon lang sila nagkasama-sama ulit, so buti na lang we got the win,” said Sison. (Actually, the team just played it by ear. Two of the players only arrived today. We’re lucky that we won.)
The Philippines posted its biggest lead in the last quarter 65-39 as they uncorked a 26-0 bumb that stunned Singaporeans.
Dorjee Chokka Lama topscored Malaysia with 20 points, but these went to nothing as the Philippines’ lead proved too big to overcome.
Other Singaporean players struggled as they couldn’t come up with enough scoring to challenge Philippines.
On Wednesday, December 3, the Philippines will face Thailand, hoping to set their their third straight win. – Rappler.com
