‘Wonder Boy’ Martin dangles unbeaten record vs Tejones

Unbeaten Carl Jammes Martin returns to the ring on February 20 when he tangles with Joe Tejones at the Biñan City Football Stadium.

Martin, dubbed “Wonder Boy,” holds a 16-0 record with 14 knockouts and is regarded as one of the Philippines’ brightest prospects in the super bantamweight division.

Unimpressive in his unanimous decision victory over journeyman Richard Rosales last December 18, Martin needs to beat Tejones (13-7, 7 knockouts) convincingly to prove his worthiness as a future title contender.

There are doubters in Martin’s real capability as his first 11 fights were held in his home province of Ifugao. Though he has stopped 4 straight opponents before Rosales, Martin’s victims, including two Thais, were not elite fighters. The fact is, their combined records were a borderline 56-30-6.

Martin, however, has shown his mettle in sparring sessions with International Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas in Magallanes, Cavite last year.

According to Ancajas, who’ll be defending his crown against Mexican Jonathan Rodriguez in April in Los Angeles, Martin has both speed and power.

Former two-division world champion Gerry Peñalosa agreed with Ancajas’ observation.

“He (Martin) is good. He just needs to be tested,” said Peñalosa.

It seems the camp of Martin isn’t rushing things up with his boxing career.

Tejones, who got knocked out by Japanese Tsuyoshi Tameda on September 17, 2019, at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo isn’t the guy to push Martin to the limit.
