Tony Parker delivers late to clinch the championship for France

MANILA, Philippines -The French national basketball team has won a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics after defeating Canada, 83-74, in the championship game of the FIBA Manila Olympic Qualifying tournament on Sunday, July 10, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Led by clutch shots from NBA veteran Tony Parker, France held on to its lead in the fourth quarter and avoided a collapse to go undefeated at 4-0 overall in the tournament, which includes wins against the Philippines, New Zealand, and Turkey.

France joins Serbia and Croatia as the final 3 teams to make up the 18-nation men’s basketball tourney of the Olympics.

Parker scored 15 of his 26 points in the final quarter, where he hit a 3-pointer to put his team ahead 73-66 with 2:15 left, and then converted a pair of free throws to make it a 9-point game which Canada couldn’t rally from.

Tournament MVP Nando de Colo also played well with 22 points and 5 boards while Boris Diaw had 9 points and 4 assists.

Canada was led by the 20 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds of Cory Joseph. –
