Thanks to its early efforts, Kaya FC-Iloilo defeated debuting team Maharlika Manila FC, 1-0, in the 2020 Philippines Football League on Wednesday, October 28 at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

In the 29th minute, midfielder Jayson Panhay scored by converting a wide cross from Daizo Horikoshi after the intense back-and-forth action that kicked off the match.

Though Kaya took control of the second half, the Iloilo-based squad struggled to find a good final touch to its chances.

Even with the entry of Kaya FC star Joven Bedic in the 78th minute, he failed to convert back-to-back opportunities in added time.

Newcomer Maharlika Manila FC, though, had a tougher outing and suffered an early blow in the 7th minute of its opening game when Cameroonian defender Serge Kaole was stretchered off the pitch after twisting his left arm.

According to Maharlika head coach Roxy Dorlas, Kaole was immediately brought to the hospital, but he may be sidelined for the rest of the season.

“Serge went on a stretcher and was brought to the hospital, but from the looks of it, he might not be able to continue the competition,” said Dorlas.

Still, even with Kaole out of the game, Maharlika tried to surprise the established Kaya team as Charlie Beaton attempted a close-range shot in the 22nd minute. Carlyle Mitchell, though, managed to deflect it.

Maharlika wasn’t spared by more injuries as playing owner Anton del Rosario returned to the pitch with a bandaged left hand in the 75th minute.

Winger MJ Libre, who is making his professional debut, and keeper Henri Bandeken Fong emerged as a bright spots for Maharlika FC defensively in keeping Kaya’s threats at bay. – Rappler.com
