Mendiola FC earned its first win in the 2020 Philippines Football League (PFL) with a 2-0 blanking of Maharlika Manila FC on Monday, November 9, at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

After losing its first 3 games, Mendiola finally crashed into the win column and goes up to 4th place with 4 points, while Maharlika ended its PFL campaign with 3 points.

Mendiola scored a breakthrough goal in the 25th minute as Jim Ashley Flores sent a long cross to Aaron Altiche who fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and Jon Nebreja headed in the rebound for a sure finish.

Although Altiche’s shot crossed the line, the Mendiola’s first league goal was credited to Nebreja.

Flores was on fire the whole game as Stephen Appiah ran down left flank and found the Mendiola captain, who doubled the lead for the win in the final minute.

The opening goal turned the tides in favor of San Beda’s alumni squad as Mendiola was able to dominate possession in the first half.

Maharlika took control early in the game marked by MJ Libre finding Jose Montelibano, whose header sailed wide in the 14th minute.

The men in white were aiming for a late equalizer in the 88th minute with a set-piece, but Charlie Beaton’s corner could not find a finishing touch. – Rappler.com
