MANILA, Philippines – It would seem like a massive understatement to say that Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao is happy that TNT import Ivan Johnson got banned for life from the PBA.
The fiery mentor seemed to feel it was much-awaited vindication that the 31-year-old Johnson, whom Guiao had a run-in with the import last season, got the boot. (READ: TNT rues lack of due process on banned import Johnson)
“I think that’s good riddance. He’s a world-class asshole anyway,” Guiao declared Saturday, February 13, after the Painters won their first game of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, 95-86, over the Star Hotshots.
“I think they just tolerated his antics last year. Tinolerate nila commissioner [then PBA commissioner Chito Salud] ‘yan kaya lumaki ulo (Commissioner tolerated that so he got cocky). I guess that’s just karmic justice.”
“We don’t need guys like him in the Philippines,” he added.
Johnson was banned from the league and fined P250,000 Saturday after he cursed at league commissioner Chito Narvasa during TNT’s game against Meralco. (READ: Banned TNT import Johnson: ‘The devil is working overtime’)
Guiao had front row seats to witnessing Johnson quickly gain notoriety for his aggressiveness in last year’s Commissioner’s Cup, especially when Rain or Shine and TNT (then Talk ‘N Text) met during quite the emotional and dramatic 7-game finals where TNT ultimately prevailed. There was an incident when Johnson bumped Guiao along the sidelines in Game 1, resulting in a P150,000-fine on the import.
“If you notice, he doesn’t pick on the imports. Ang gusto niyang awayin yung mga Pilipino dahil naliliitan siya sa mga Pilipino (He wants to pick on the Filipinos because he thinks Filipinos are small),” Guiao added.
“Hindi naman nakikipag-away sa import yan. I guess that’s the best for the league. Binu-bully niya mga Pinoy, hindi naman niya ma-bully mga kapwa niya import.”
