MANILA, Philippines (2ND UPDATE) – The national squash team bagged a silver and 3 bronze medals so far for the Philippines in the 29th Southeast Asian Games after the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles earned podium finishes in their respective events held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Jemyca Aribado snatched a silver and two bronze medals in consecutive days after competing in the women’s doubles, women’s jumbo doubles, and mixed doubles squash events. She teamed up with Yvonne Alyssa Dalida in the women’s and women’s jumbo doubles, and with Robert Andrew Garcia in the mixed doubles competition.
In the women’s doubles event, Aribado, 23, and Dalida, 24, settled for bronze after succumbing to their Malaysian foes Chan Yiwen and Nazihah Haris in the semis on Wednesday, August 23. The two saw action once more in the jumbo doubles gold medal match a day after, but ultimately settled for silver after dropping to Singaporean duo Mao Shi Hui and Sherilyn Yang, 0-2 (5-11, 8-11).
The mixed doubles, on the other hand, saw an all-Malaysian final, with the Philippines and Singapore sharing the bronze on Thursday.
Garcia, together with David William Pelino, also claimed the bronze in the men’s jumbo doubles event.
Garcia and Pelino were involved yet unharmed in the bus crash on Monday, August 21, when members of the men’s team were bumped from behind, prompting a rescheduling of games for affected teams.
