MANILA, Philippines – Microsoft announced on Monday, March 14 (Tuesday, March 15 in Manila) it was going to support cross-platform play between the Xbox One and Windows 10 as well as enable developers to support cross-network play.
The move would allow Xbox One and Windows 10 players to potentially play games against players on other online multiplayer networks, such as other consoles (the PlayStation 4 most notably) and other PC networks.
The first title to get the cross-network play treatment will be Rocket League by developer Psyonix. Rocket League will “enable cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.”
Console gamers are usually restricted to the network of the console they’re on, so engaging in heated battles across consoles can potentially become the next big thing for console gaming.
At the same time, there’s also a distinct difference between how PC players and console players control their games, so it will be a likely point of debate as to whether PC and console players should play against each other more readily in competitive games like first-person shooters given the difference in degrees of fine control. – Rappler.com
