MANILA, Philippines – Facebook is testing a new feature that will allow readers to see a publisher’s background with the tap of an “i” button. So far, this feature has only been rolled out to a select group of users.

The feature is part of the Facebook Journalism Project, the social network’s program that takes aim at the proliferation of fake or inaccurate information being posted on the site.

It is designed to help readers know more about the publisher sharing the post, whether it’s an established news source or a source that may be of questionable quality. By having information about the publisher, it is hoped that the reader will be able to better judge the quality of a post.

The “i” button appears in the upper right-hand corner of an article’s title. When the button is tapped, Facebook shows publisher information pulled from online sources, related articles from other trustworthy sites, and information on how the article is being shared on Facebook.

Speaking to TechCrunch about the tool, Facebook product manager Sara Su said: “People have told us that they want more information about what they’re reading. They want better tools to help them understand if an article is from a publisher they trust and evaluate if the story itself is credible.” (READ: Tagging fake news on Facebook has minimal effect – study)

Facebook also said in a blog post: “We’ll continue to listen to people’s feedback and work with publishers to provide people easy access to the contextual information that helps people decide which stories to read, share, and trust, and to improve the experiences people have on Facebook.” – Rappler.com
