NEW YORK CITY, USA – Apple said Monday, Sept 23, it sold a record 9 million iPhones in the 3 days after launching two new versions of the smartphone.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet — more than 9 million new iPhones sold –new record for first weekend sales,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook in a statement.

Apple said demand has exceeded the supply for the new handsets, and that some customers will have to wait.

“The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly,” Cook said.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

Apple began worldwide sales Friday of the high-end iPhone 5S and a lower-cost iPhone 5C, drawing crowds from Australia to Tokyo to Paris to New York.

The new phones are being sold in the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore.

Apple also said more than 200 million of its smartphones and tablets are now running the redesigned operating system iOS 7, “making it the fastest software upgrade in history.”

The new operating system has a bolder look, and includes the free iTunes Radio launched by Apple. It is a free upgrade for a number of iPhones and iPads sold in the past couple of years. – Rappler.com
