FORBIDDEN WEST. Aloy faces off against the mammoth-like Tremortusk

Sony

Watch 14 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming 'Horizon Forbidden West' here

Horizon Forbidden West is among the most-awaited PlayStation exclusives this year as part of the launch window titles for the PS5, and probably among the last for the PS4. There’s still no specific release date – just that “development is on track” according to Ben McCaw, the game’s narrative director.

The wait becomes even harder now for series fans (and PS5 owners still thirsty for showcase-type titles) after Guerilla Games on Friday, May 28, debuted gameplay footage from the PS5, featuring some of the most stunning visuals yet we’ve seen from the console.

The first game, 2016’s Horizon Zero Dawn, looked incredible, so we’re glad to see that the sequel is living up to the series’ reputation.

4 best moments: ‘Horizon Forbidden West’ gameplay reveal

We’ve got our favorite moments from the 14 minutes of gameplay. Here they are:

1. The underwater sequence

Horizon Zero Dawn had amazing, lush landscapes in a world set 1000 years into the future, ruled by robotic creatures.

Forbidden West sees heroine Aloy diving underwater for the first time, all thanks to her new diving mask that lets her swim for an unlimited period of time. The sequence starts at 4:53.

The new open-world underwater environments look just as lush, with colorful sea flora, schools of fish, and one frightening alligator-like baddie swimming about, pictured below:

Check out those robots paddling in the water like puppies too.

2. The mech-mammoth fight

Guerilla Games has a better name for this new enemy: Tremortusk. (These guys come up with the best creature names, don’t they?)

Horizon’s known for its awesome-looking biomechanical baddies such as the Thunderjaw, and the Rockbreaker, or the Stormbird. In the new trailer, they showcase the new gargantuan quad-tusked, laser-firing mammoth hauling the raiders. Aloy picks off the human enemies atop with her bow and arrow, shows off some sort of new goop weapon that slows down the mammoth, and rolls away from attacks a la Demon’s Souls.

In the sequence, she also gets to show off a laser gun, and her new grappling and hang-gliding abilities, while the mammoth thrashes about, throws off the raiders on its back, and destroys the surrounding ruins.

The Tremortusk looks so beastly and majestic that you almost don’t want to destroy it. Sequence starts at 11:02.

3. The waves

Is it just us or are these the best looking waves we’ve seen in a game? Check it out at 10:05.

4. Aloy’s hang-glider

As mentioned, Aloy’s adding some classic gaming moves to her repertoire: grappling and hang-gliding. Aloy’s hang-glider looks cool: a transparent, umbrella-like device that generates an electric force field for lift.
