Once renowned as one of the best zoos in Southeast Asia, the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia is under the international spotlight after its last remaining giraffe died last week and was found to have an 18kg ball of plastic inside its stomach. The international community is calling the zoo a nightmare zoo after the conditions of other zoo animals were brought to light including overcrowding, disappearance of rare species, and an increase in the number of animal deaths.
