AQUINO: I HAVE ACCEPTED PURISIMA’S RESIGNATION
President Benigno Aquino calls out Special Action Forces or SAF commander Getulio Napeñas for the botched operation that cost the lives of 44 of his men.
He says Napeñas, as SAF commander, should have had “situational awareness” and should have fully known the dangers of the operation.
(It is clear that the situation of the troops was already dire. This should be known to the commander of the operations. Since he’s always deployed to Mindanao, it is expected of him to have situational awareness. As commander, he should know the plans and the perils involved. There were 3 possible chances wherein the operation could have been aborted or changed….Why did it push through when what was happening was already so far from what was planned?)
He adds, accepting the resignation of his friend, suspended PNP Chief Alan Purisima was a painful decision.
(The public knows that we go a long way back. This is why I hope you understand it is painful for me to see him leave the police force under these circumstances. I accept, effective immediately, the resignation of General Alan Purisima and I am very thankful for his long years of service.)
In an interview with GMA 7, Purisima says no one pressured him to resign. He adds he did not give orders during the Mamasapano mission… and only provided the intelligence.
Purisima also passes the blame to Napeñas, saying it was the role of the ground commander to give orders. The President also tells the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to surrender terrorist Abdul Basit Usman… adding if this is not possible, the group should not stand in the way of his arrest.
(Let this serve as a warning and reminder: we will hunt Usman down. For those led astray who will attempt to get in our way in hunting Usman down, remember: you are going against the State, and we will run you over.)
