MANILA, Philippines – In Vatican City, 115 cardinal-electors gathered to determine the successor of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The Vatican on Thursday, March 14 (Philippine time), announced that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the new pope of the Catholic Church.
A Jesuit, he is the first South American pope in history. He will be called Pope Francis I.
