JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi King Abdullah on Wednesday, July 3, sent a message of congratulations to Egypt’s new caretaker president, saying his appointment comes at a “critical” time in the nation’s history, the official Saudi news agency SPA reported.
“On behalf of the people of Saudi Arabia I congratulate you for taking over the leadership of Egypt at this critical time in its history,” Abdullah said in the first message of congratulations by an Arab leader to Adly Mansour.
The Saudi king said, “We call on God to help you bear the responsibility to achieve the hopes of our brotherly people in Egypt.”
At the same time, Egypt’s opposition leader Amr Mussa said consultations start “now” for a new Egyptian government.
“Consultations will start from now, for a government and reconciliation,” said the former Arab League chief, who ran unsuccessfully against Morsi for the presidency last year.
“This is the end of Morsi’s regime. It’s over.”
The king also paid tribute to the Egyptian armed forces and its leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for using “wisdom” in helping to resolve the crisis and avoiding “unforseen consequences.”
Late Wednesday the Egyptian army deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and Sisi declared former chief justice Mansour caretaker president, after a week of bloodshed in Egypt that killed nearly 50 people.
Sisi also called for early presidential and parliamentary elections in Egypt, triggering a flood of celebrations across the Arab world’s most populous nation. – Rappler.com
