MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported Saturday, April 16, that a magnitude 7 earthquake hit Japan again at approximately 1:25 am Japan time (12:25 Manila time).
The earthquake struck 1 kilometer west-southwest of Kumamoto prefecture of the Kyushu main island at a depth of 10 km, a day after another powerful quake killed at least 9 in the same area.
The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami warning for the western coast of Kyushu island, where hundreds were injured in Thursday’s quake, but later lifted it.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that waves of about one meter (3.3 feet) may have already reached shore.
The Saturday quake occured as rescuers in Kumamoto continued to search through damaged buildings for possible survivors following Thursday’s 6.5-magnitude quake.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Friday that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe planned to visit Kumamoto on Saturday to meet victims. – with reports from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
