Graft convicts denied family visitations, French Film Festival in Jakarta next week, and more traffic violations lead our wrap of stories from the past 24 hours.

1. KPK denies Anas, Akil family visits for a month

Families of former Democratic Party Chairman Anas Urbaningrum and disgraced Constitutional Court Chief Justice Akil Mochtar were banned by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) from visiting the graft convicts, after the two filed a letter of complaint regarding the condition of the prison they are in. “They cannot be visited for a month, from November 12 to December 12,” KPK spokesman Priharsa Nugraha said, as quoted by the Jakarta Globe. According to Priharsa, the letter could be deemed as an act of obstruction for prison officials in carrying out their duties, a major violation as regulated by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Anas regularly criticises the condition of the prison he is in, by writing it in a letter and having his assistants tweeting the contents of his letter on his personal Twitter account @anasurbaningrum. Akil has had his family visitation privileges denied after being involved in a verbal quarrel with another convict former Bogor Mayor Rachmat Yasin in prison. 

2. Operation Zebra nets 3,930 on first day

Jakarta Police netted 3,930 vehicles during the first day of Operation Zebra on November 26, as reported by Tempo.co. Police confiscated 1,532 driver’s licences, 2,340 paid vehicle tax papers (STNK), 48 motorcycles, and one car. Operation Zebra, which will continue until December 9, targets drivers who violate traffic regulations, particularly those going against the flow of traffic. Violators can see fines of IDR250,000 to IDR1 million. 

3. Less working hours for women? VP seems inclined

State Apparatus and Bureacratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi said that his ministry and the House of Representatives (DPR) will discuss an idea to cut female employees’ working hours. Previously, Vice President Jusuf Kalla aired a thought that female civil servants or professionals must work two hours less than regular schedule to attend to family matters. “We will discuss this. That is a good advice, with consideration of taking care of families and children, and creating a family harmony,” Yuddy said as quoted by Kompas.com. Deputy House Speaker Fadli Zon agreed, as long as there is no objections from both males and females.  

4. French Film Festival in 9 cities

The Indonesia French Film Festival is set to for December 4 to 9, and will actually be held in 9 cities: Jakarta, Balikpapan, Bandung, Denpasar, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. The first foreign film festival in Indonesia this year will showcase 8 films that has not yet been screened in the country: Elle L’Adore, La Belle et la Bete, Mea Culpa, Grace de Monaco, Sils Maria, Qu’est-ce Qu’on a Fait au Bon Dieu, Attila Marcel, and Casse-Tete Chinois. 5. 6.8–magnitude quake in eastern Indonesia, no tsunami warning

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Wednesday evening, November 26, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck at a depth of 41 kilometers (25 miles) under the Molucca Sea, 161 kilometers northwest of the city of Kota Ternate, in the Maluku Islands and can be felt as far as the city of Manado in North Sulawesi. Just last week, the same areas was hit by 7.1 magnitude earthquake. Local authorities said there were no reports of casualties or major damage. Read more on Rappler.com. —Rappler.com
