‘He still very much wants to continue to play this season, and we certainly want him to play,’ says Ginebra coach Tim Cone as Mark Caguioa gets unrestricted free agent tag

Mark Caguioa isn’t going anywhere after all.

Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone clarified that the team’s living legend is busy preparing for their next PBA conference even after the Gin Kings placed him on the unrestricted free agent list.

“He still very much wants to continue to play this season, and we certainly want him to play. Due to personal issues prior to the conference, he couldn’t get ready in time for this bubble,” Cone said in a text message on Wednesday, September 22.

The nine-time PBA champion and 2012 MVP was dropped from the roster entirely as Ginebra needed to make room in its reserve list for Scottie Thompson, who has been quarantined in accordance with the league’s health and safety protocols.

With Thompson and the injured Japeth Aguilar now inactive, veteran sniper Jeff Chan has been recalled from the unrestricted free agent list.

Caguioa last played for Ginebra on November 20, 2020 in Game 3 of the Philippine Cup semifinals against the Meralco Bolts. Including that game, he only had three appearances last season, and averaged 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 6.4 minutes per game.

His looming return right now, however, is the farthest thing from their minds as the Kings, currently clinging to eighth place, try to stay alive in the 2021 Philippine Cup. – Rappler.com
