At least 11 commercial flights scheduled to land at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday, October 9, were diverted to Clark airport 80 kilometers away from the capital after an airport system in Manila bogged down

MANILA, Philippines – At least 11 commercial flights scheduled to land at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday, October 9, were diverted to Clark airport 80 kilometers away from the capital after an airport system in Manila bogged down.

The Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) reported that the failure of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at NAIA resulted in the diversion of domestic and international flights, which included the following:

  • 3 Cebu Pacific flights coming from Tagbilaran, Caticlan and Naga City
  • 2 Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights coming from Tuguegarao and Kalibo
  • 2 Airphil Express flights from Ilolo and Incheon in South Korea
  • a Bangkok flight of Thai Airways
  • 3 chartered flightsfrom Davao, Kalibo and Quezon

CIAC President Victor Jose Luciano said that the flights were safely diverted to Clark International Airport, also called Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) at about 10:45 in the morning.

“All of the passengers are safe,” he said.

Luciano had earlier said that Clark International Airport is always ready to accommodate diverted flights. The airport is bustling with more than 316 aircraft movements per week.

The ILS issue was also fixed and NAIA operations normalized within the day. – Rappler.com
