“It’s been what, 7 and a half years, right? You know, she’s been such a great part of my life, the best blessing I’ve ever received…we’re engaged,” said Paul. (READ: Toni’s emotional message for Paul: You will be number one)
The proposal
Paul said that he proposed on January 21, the day after Toni’s birthday in front of her immediate family. “I was in tears, it was quite an emotional moment,” said Paul.
He said that he asked permission from her parents, Pinty and Bonoy Gonzaga, first. Toni’s mom apparently said, “It’s about time,” while her dad said, “Why are you asking me? Ask her!”
Paul said that he assured them that he wasn’t trying to take Toni away from her – only that he wanted to join her family, too. He said that he broke down in tears as well – and that Toni did too, when her father embraced her.
The announcement was preceded by a lengthy segment chronicling the couple’s love story, spanning 7 years, nearing 8 – narrated by Toni’s younger sister Alex Gonzaga.
Toni also addressed her sister, telling her that she would always be there for her.
Message for the fans
“I think aside from my family, kay Direk Paul, one of the biggest blessing talaga…mga nagmamahal sa akin,” she said, referring to her fans, mentioning the fan clubs.
She thanked her fans for standing by her and defending her when other people said negative things about her online.
“Everything that I do, you show me that it’s worth it,” said Toni.
Shooting down rumors
Earlier in the show, Toni shot down pregnancy rumors, as well as rumors that she had a huge fight with her parents, part of speculation as to why she was absent from an earlier episode of The Buzz.
This is the first formal announcement made by the couple. There was some confusion earlier when Toni’s Home Sweetie Home co-star Sandy Andolong greeted Toni on her birthday, describing her as a “loving and loyal fianceé.” Sandy has since apologized for using the term, saying she thought it was an apt way to express her thoughts.
In an interview with Rappler last August, Toni talked about what she learned from her relationship with the film director.
“I think love and friends are two things that you don’t chase. True love and true friends come,” she said.
