The joint birthday celebration we’ve all been waiting for is here!

Karen Davila and Lyca Gairanod marked their viral November 21 birthday with a charity project at the singer’s hometown in Tanza, Cavite, as a way to give back to those in need. 

“For this birthday, I didn’t want it to be about me and Lyca. But we wanted it to be about other people. May pandemya pa tayo ngayon (It’s still the pandemic) and what we wanted to do is help people and give them gifts,” Davila said in their vlog released on Saturday, November 20. 

Through the help of some partners, they gave away 45 bicycles complete with bike safety gears, and loading business starting kits, which includes 14 smartphones and 10 pocket wifis, to Gairanod’s neighbors. The party, of course, wouldn’t be complete without a sumptuous meal for everyone. 

Gairanod, who turned 17 years old, said, “Hindi lang po para sa amin ‘tong special day na ito. Para rin ‘to sa mga taong kailangan nating bigyan. Nagulat din ako kasi ‘yung pahanda ni Ms. Karen for me is special at hindi lang para sa akin kundi para rin sa ibang tao. Ayaw kasi namin na mag-birthday kami, na kami lang masaya. Gusto rin namin na may mapapasaya kami.” 

(This special day is not only for us. It’s also for people in need. I was also surprised by the celebration Ms. Karen prepared because it was not only for me but for others, too. We want our celebration to be meaningful and we want others to be happy, too.) 

The singer was also seen performing some of her hit songs and covers to entertain the attendees of their joint birthday celebration. 

In the vlog, Davila, who turned 51, also admitted that she felt pressured to celebrate after their “Oh my god, birthday ko rin ‘yun (that’s also my birthday)” video went viral. 

“Hindi naman po namin iniisip na magiging viral [‘yun] (We didn’t think it’d go viral). But you know what? I usually celebrate my birthday quietly. Pero ito, (But now), it’s special because may ka-birthday ako (I’m sharing my birthday with someone else),” the veteran journalist said. 

Davila and Gairanod’s birthday first went viral in August 2021, when netizens loved the broadcaster’s reaction after finding out that she shared the same birthdate with the singer. 

“We’re meant to meet! How many people ang makakatsamba mo, ini-interview ka, ka-birthday mo? (How many people do you interview and happen to share a birthday with?)” Davila said then in the viral interview. – Rappler.com
