Brendan Fraser open to doing another ‘Mummy’ film

MANILA, Philippines – For the promotion of his latest film, The Whale, Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser shared with Variety in an interview released Wednesday, October 12, that he was willing to visit Egypt one more time to make another Mummy film.

“I don’t know how it would work, but I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit,” Fraser said. In the same interview, The Mummy director Stephen Sommers said that he had cast Fraser in the role for possessing a specific set of skills.

“He could throw a punch and take a punch, and he had a great sense of humor. You really like the guy. He never comes across as cocky or arrogant,” Sommer said, also noting how Fraser did all of his stunts and was always game for anything the production threw at him.

Fraser was known for playing main protagonist and archaeologist Rick O’Connell in the cult favorite Mummy trilogy (1999-2008). His last appearance was in the franchise’s final and third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

In 2017, Universal released a reboot of the franchise with Tom Cruise in the leading role. The film opened to little critical acclaim.

In the interview, Fraser also commented on what he thought went wrong with the reboot.

“The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary,” he said.

Fraser’s appearance in his latest film, The Whale, has put him in Oscar conversations for his critically-acclaimed performance as a gay, obese man struggling to re-connect with his estranged daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink. – Rappler.com
