Rapper Saweetie paid homage to her Filipino and Black roots at the 2021 Met Gala on September 13, where the dress code was “American Independence.”
The rapper wore a custom red Christian Cowan gown, with a train in two panels: one in red, yellow, blue, and white to represent the Filipino flag, and the other in black and red for the Black American heritage flag.
According to the designer, the gown was hand-embellished with 10 million crystals.
Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, has a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father.
She is known for her single “Icy Girl,” and was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards for her song “Tap In.”
