Child killed while transporting fireworks

MANILA, Philippines – A six-year-old child was killed while a man was injured while they were transporting some P14,000 worth of firecrackers in Bulacan province Monday night, Dec. 26, 2011.

 

The incident occurred at 8 p.m. Monday along Partida Road in Partida village in Norzagaray town in Bulacan, radio dzBB reported Tuesday.

 

The report said the child, initially identified as Silva, died while undergoing treatment at the Norzagaray Municipal Hospital. It said the man, identified as one Noli Silva, reportedly the child’s father, was still under observation.

 

An initial investigation showed the two victims, from Nueva Ecija, bought P14,000 worth of fireworks from Bocaue, Bulacan.

 

But the fireworks exploded while they were transporting the fireworks, the report said. Police are still determining what caused the explosion.

 

Meanwhile, at least six more people injured by fireworks were brought to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for treatment.

 

The injured included a four-year-old boy from Quezon City who was playing with the explosive “piccolo.” The boy sustained wounds in the hands.

 

But the more serious injury was that of a 10-year-old girl who was injured in the face and hands after a “bawang” she was playing with exploded.

 

Various nongovernment organizations have called on Filipinos to drop the use of firecrackers and fireworks this year, citing past injuries.
