Top Philippine officials: Pacquiao still an inspiration

Despite losing controversially to Timothy Bradley, the country's top leadership are still wholly behind Manny Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – Despite losing controversially to Timothy Bradley, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao still have the full support of the country’s top leadership.

In separate statements, both Malacanang and the office of Vice President Jejomar Binay reaffirmed their support for the boxer.

Pacquiao was defeated in a split decision during his fight with Bradley on Saturday, June 9 (Sunday, June 10 in Manila).

“Sa kabila ng pagkabigo ni Manny Pacquiao na depensahan ang WBO Welterweight belt laban kay Timothy Bradley, hindi pa rin natitinag ang suporta ng sambayanang Pilipino sa ating Pambansang kamao,” a statement from presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

Muling ipinamalas ni Manny ang tatag at lakas ng Pinoy sa buong mundo: na anumang dagok, hirap at sakit ang danasin natin, hindi tayo magdadalawang-isip na ituloy ang laban para sa karangalan ng bayan,” it read.

“[Ang] bawat pagkadapa at pagkalugmok ay pagkakataon upang ipamalas ang kakayahan nating taas-noong bumangon,” it said.

“Si Manny pa rin ang nag-iisa at ipinagmamalaking Pambansang Kamao ng sambayanang Pilipino,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the Vice President’s office sent to the media a message of support for Pacquiao.

“Manny fought hard and has shown he has the true heart of a champion. He remains a source of inspiration for the Filipino people,” it said. – Rappler.com
