The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, October 6, released the initial list of schools that have been approved to conduct limited face-to-face classes.

The pilot run will start on November 15 and will end on January 31. The DepEd is targeting to expand the conduct of limited face-to-face classes to more schools on March 7.

At the Senate committee hearing on basic education on Wednesday, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan told senators that 59 public schools have passed the assessment of health officials to conduct the pilot face-to-face classes. He added DepEd will continue to assess nominated schools until the initial number of 120 schools for the pilot run is reached.

The schools also passed the assessment conducted by the Department of Health

On Tuesday, October 19, DepEd Assistant Secretary Malcolm Garma said that 29 public schools have withdrawn from the pilot implementation of limited face-to-face classes. 

Garma said that the main reason for backing out was that local government units, their communities, and parents were not in favor of holding face-to-face classes in their areas.

The DOH is the agency assessing the risk classification of areas where schools will be chosen for the pilot run. LGUs and parents, however, may opt out if they think their communities are not ready.
