WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vice President Leni Robredo and her running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan are set to launch their bids for the two highest positions in the land on Tuesday, February 8, the start of the official campaign period in the 2022 elections.
It is an early start for the Robredo-Pangilinan tandem on Tuesday, as they are scheduled to stage events with supporters across several towns in Camarines Sur, home province of the lone female presidential candidate from Bicol. By 4:30 pm, the opposition tandem is expected to return to Naga City to hear Mass at the Naga City Cathedral.
The main event is slated at 5:30 pm at Plaza Quezon in Naga City, where Robredo and Pangilinan are expected to appear on stage together with their senatorial ticket and their Bicolano allies.

Together with running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan and members of her Senate slate, the lone female presidential candidate appeared before a pink-clad crowd and spoke about her brand of “tsinelas” leadership – reaching out to those in the margins of society and making them the center of public service.
The tsinelas (slippers) remark is a nod to Robredo’s late husband, former interior secretary Jesse Robredo, who championed tsinels leadership, or governance that is accessible and people-centered.
“Isang pamahalaang magmamadaling sumaklolo ‘pag dumaing ka, makikipagpuyatan para mapaginhawa ka, lulusong sa baha para iahon ka. Susuotan natin ng tsinelas ang gobyerno at patatawirin sa mga pilapil papunta sa iyo. Sa ating pamamahala, laylayan ang magiging bagong sentro,” presidential aspirant Leni Robredo promised at her proclamation rally in hometown Naga City in Camarines Sur on Tuesday, February 8.
(A government that will rush to your side when you cry out for help, that will stay up all night with you to comfort you, and will brave floodwaters to save you. We are going to put slippers on the government and make it cross embankments to reach you. Under my leadership, the margins of society will be the new center.)

Senator Kiko Pangilinan, a farmers’ and fishers’ advocate, described lifting a heavy bayong (big woven bag) to illustrate how their tandem’s government would bring the masses out of the depths of society.
“‘Pag ang bayong mabigat, saan mo ibubuhat, sa ibabaw, o sa ilalim? Kinakailangan sa ilalaim, dahil pagka sa ibabaw masisira. Matatapon ang iyong laman. Pero ‘pag sa ilalim, inangat mo lahat, maidadala mo nang maayos ang mga gamit sa loob. Iyan ang gagawin namin. Uunahin ‘yung nasa ilalim,” he said in his proclamation rally speech in Naga City on Tuesday, February 8.
(If the bag is heavy, where will you hold it, at the top or at the bottom? It must be at the bottom, because if you lift it at the top, it will break. The things inside will fall out. But if you carry from the bottom, you will bring everything up and along with you. This is what we’ll do. We’ll put the ones at the bottom first.)

‘Susuotan natin ng tsinelas ang gobyerno’: Leni’s vow of new politics a nod to Jesse Robredo
A government that listens, does not steal, and would be with you even in the darkest moments – this is the promise of Leni Robredo if she wins the presidency in the May elections.
It’s a homage to the tsinelas leadership or the accessible and people-centered brand of governance that her late husband Jesse Robredo was known for when he was Naga City mayor.
It is also the same kind of governance that Robredo herself had been championing since that fateful day in August 2012, when a plane crash took away Jesse’s life and thrusted her into the national political spotlight.
